Van Marwijk has ´good feeling´ about Dutch future

Bert van Marwijk has voiced his pleasure after extending his contract as the Netherlands coach until 2016.

The former Feyenoord and Dortmund coach maintained he felt there was a mutual desire to continue his relationship the Dutch Football Association (KNVB) over the long haul.

I ve often said I m very happy with the KNVB, and there is still plenty of talent (coming through), van Marwijk told OnsOranje.

If I have a good feeling (about staying), I think it s okay to remain there for a long time. If I m progressing, I feel that they want to keep me, and that was the case.

However, reports in the Netherlands had suggested that van Marwijk had initially set his sights on only a two-year extension, but eventually gave into the KNVB s offer of four years.

Despite the change, the coach chose to take up the proposal on the grounds of ensuring the foundation of the national team remains a stable platform, but admitted that he may be enticed by a new challenge in the future.

The organisation wants peace and security, he said.

I also have the space of deciding on my future, but only if there is an opportunity that comes at the right time in my life. We have made good arrangements.

Van Marwijk assumed leadership of the Netherlands in 2008, following the departure of Marco van Basten, and has enjoyed a fruitful spell in charge, winning 31 of his 45 matches and finishing as a runner-up in the 2010 World Cup.

The coaches next major assignment will be preparing the Netherland squad for Euro 2012, where they have been grouped with Germany, Portugal and Denmark.
