Lucas signs PSG extension

Paris Saint-Germain have signed winger Lucas Moura to a two-year contract extension.

Lucas moved to PSG from Sao Paulo in January 2013 after the Ligue 1 club secured his signature in August 2012.

He has since helped PSG to three consecutive league titles and scored eight goals in 46 appearances this season as Laurent Blanc s men sealed an unprecedented domestic treble.

As well as retaining the title, PSG also won the Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue, having earlier triumphed in the Trophee des Champions.

The Brazil international has previously been linked with Premier League clubs Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool.

´Leader´ Jorginho has replaced Barkley as penalty taker, Lampard confirms

Frank Lampard hailed Jorginho for his leadership qualities and confirmed the midfielder will replace Ross Barkley as Chelsea s first-choice penalty taker.

The Italy midfielder scored from the spot in Chelsea s 2-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday after Mason Mount was fouled by Adam Webster inside the box.

Jorginho was back on spot-kick duties a week and a half on from Barkley missing a crucial penalty in the 1-0 Champions League defeat to Valencia.

Lampard stood by Barkley following that miss but he was also overlooked on Wednesday as Pedro stepped up from 12 yards in the 7-1 win against Grimsby Town in the EFL Cup.

A club statement read: Onyewu, who has been out for virtually the whole season due to injury, but who at this time is getting ready to face the World Cup adventure in South Africa wit…

Shelvey and Vardy named in England squad

Jonjo Shelvey has been recalled to the England squad for their Euro 2016 qualifiers against San Marino and Switzerland, while Jamie Vardy is also selected.

Swansea City midfielder Shelvey won his solitary cap at senior level against San Marino back in 2012.

The 23-year-old has been rewarded for an impressive start to the season for Garry Monk s side and his call-up caps a memorable day in which he played his part in a 2-1 Premier League win over Manchester United.

Leicester City striker Vardy could add to the first cap he gained in a goalless friendly against Republic of Ireland when Roy Hodgson s Group E leaders travel to San Marino on Saturday before facing second-placed Switzerland at Wembley three days later.

Vardy hit the headlines for the wrong re…

Ibrahimovic might have ´fear´ over Serie A return – Maldini

AC Milan director Paolo Maldini believes fear could hold Zlatan Ibrahimovic back from returning to Serie A.

LA Galaxy superstar Ibrahimovic s contract is set to expire and the former Milan, Inter and Juventus striker has been linked with a move back to Italy.

Ibrahimovic, whose side were eliminated from the MLS play-offs by Los Angeles FC, claimed he would score 20 goals a season in Serie A amid growing links to Napoli, Bologna and Inter.

The possibility of Ibrahimovic returning to Milan has also been mentioned as the Rossoneri struggle for goals, however, Maldini cast doubt over the 38-year-old s Italy comeback.

Ibra would be a dream return for many reasons, but I think within his mind there is a little fear that he won t be the dominant Ibra of old, Ma…

Tottenham 2-1 Aston Villa: Son shines as Spurs end losing streak

Tottenham ended a three-match Premier League losing streak with a 2-1 win over Aston Villa, Son Heung-min playing a decisive role in both Spurs goals.

Spurs had lost their previous three league games by an aggregate scoreline of 9-1 and another defeat would have seen them reach a 17-year low, but Nuno Espirito Santo s men got the job done despite the temporary disappointment of being pegged back by Villa.

Harry Kane was unable to end his dry spell despite going close from the halfway line, meaning he has gone six league games without a goal for the first time in six years.

But Son set up Hojbjerg for the first-half opener before providing the ball that Matt Targett turned into his own net under pressure from Lucas Moura for the winner, with Ollie Watkins having…

(GSM) Portugal defender Paulo Ferreira has announced his retirement from international football.

The Chelsea player made the decision despite being called into the squad for his country s opening two Euro 2012 qualifiers.

He was a substitute in the final of Euro 2004 in his home country, coming off the bench but unable to prevent Portugal losing to Greece.

Atletico are the toughest possible draw, say Barcelona

Atletico Madrid are the toughest possible opponents that holders Barcelona could have drawn in the Champions League quarter-finals, according to board member Javier Bordas.

The two La Liga rivals met in the last eight of the tournament in 2013-14, with Atletico prevailing 2-1 on aggregate en route to a final defeat by Real Madrid.

Barca won last season s competition, but Bordas does not think they could have been handed more difficult opposition at this stage of the competition, despite the likes of Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain and rivals Real Madrid being in the hat.

I don’t think there was a tougher opponent, said Bordas. They are the side who defend better than anyone.

Atlético met Barcelona in the 2013/14 quarter-finals, winning 1-0 at h…

Kaboul leaves Watford by mutual consent

Watford have terminated the contract of Younes Kaboul by mutual consent, bringing an end to the defender s two-and-a-half-year association with the club.

Kaboul joined Watford from Sunderland in a reported £4million deal in August 2016 and featured heavily in his debut campaign at Vicarage Road.

The former Tottenham and Portsmouth centre-back has struggled with injuries since then, however, and has not been used since a 2-0 Premier League win over Southampton 15 months ago.

Watford have now taken the decision to end the 32-year-old s time at the club early, with his contract originally due to expire at the end of the season.

Stephen Kenny eager to look ahead as Republic of Ireland lose again

Republic of Ireland boss Stephen Kenny is refusing to give up on Euro 2024 qualification despite seeing his side slip to a damaging defeat in Greece.

Kenny admitted Ireland have given themselves “a mountain to climb” if they are to get out of Group B after losing both of their opening fixtures following Friday night’s 2-1 reverse in Athens, but he remains defiant ahead of Gibraltar’s visit to the Aviva Stadium on Monday evening.

Asked if the task is now near-impossible, he said: “It’s only the second game. We’ve given ourselves a mountain to climb.

It ends in Athens. |
